This painting by Eng Siak Loy was inspired by his past compositions of the old jetty along Tanjong Rhu. According to Mr Eng, it was common to see labourers moving charcoal on and off these boats to be shipped and sold to places all around Singapore. This creation reflects Mr Eng’s unique style of applying broad angular brushstrokes on the canvas, especially distinct in the depiction of the skies in the background. This liberal style of painting contrasts with the meticulous illustration of reflections on the water surface.
