Coolies were mainly chinese immigrants who came to Singapore and engaged in hard labour to earn a living, They were employed in mines, ports, plantations, construction sites and worked as rickshaw pullers. Many of them were also responsible for tasks such as loading and unloading materials along the Singapore River. They did phsyically demanding jobs under the hot sun for long hours.
