While largely influenced by Chinese art and the Tao philosophy in his work, Tung Yue Nang has incorporated Western elements into his work.
Tung is known for his ink paintings of iconic places such as Singapore River, Joo Chiat, Pulau Ubin and Chinatown. He managed to create a nice historical ambience in his paintings by focusing on the largely monochrome characteristic in his works. These paintings are also very detailed. Viewers are able to appreciate the passersby’s expressions, the clothing that they are wearing, the goods displayed at the shopfronts as well as the details on the buildings.
Tung has received numerous prestigious awards throughout his career as an artist, including the Dr. Tan Tze Chor Art Award in the Ink Painting category which he won in 2002, 2014 and 2019. He was also awarded the Distinction Award at the 8th United Overseas Bank Painting of the Year.
