The oil paintings by Zhu Hong welcomes visitors to feel the soul and character of buildings along the street of Singapore. Zhu Hong shapes the characters of these buildings by dramatising the shapes of windows and doors with thick black lines. He forges a jovial ambience by reducing the appearance of cars and passersby to their essentials. Thick blobs of oil paint and scratch marks can be observed on his canvases, both of which reflect his liberal approach toward painting.

This painting of night fall over Our Lady of Lourdes Church along Queen Street in Singapore is an important highlight of this exhibition. The depiction of a church as the main subject in Zhu Hong is uncommon and the portrayal of a night scene makes it even special. The way in which the tall buildings and stars were etched creates textual qualities to the creation while the dabs of paint in the black areas reflect Zhu Hong’s unconventional approach toward oil painting.
